Guidance for competent authorities, professional bodies and education providers

Applicants may be subject to a range of background checks when they apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

These checks may include:

  • Verification of the identity documents submitted by the applicant
  • Verification of the work history and professional regulation of the applicant
  • Confirmation from education providers that the applicant’s qualifications are genuine
  • Confirmation of the applicant’s good standing and character

All applicants consent to these checks to be carried out. When making an application to the HCPC, applicants sign the following declaration (see page 8 of the application form) I consent to the HCPC contacting any person to obtain further information about my application or to verify the information that I have provided and agree that any person who is so contacted may provide the HCPC with any information about me which that person holds.

In order to help us process applications for registration as efficiently as possible, we would ask you to respond promptly to any emails you receive from UKverification@hcpc-uk.org.

We recognise that regulation varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and that, for example, it may not be your normal practice to issue certificates of current professional status or letters of good standing. If you receive a request from us, please let us have whatever information you are able to provide.

HCPC provides details of registrants’ status and letters of good standing free of charge to other competent authorities and professional bodies. We would ask you to act on a reciprocal basis in dealing with any requests made to your organisation by the HCPC.
